SETI AIR Newsletter - May 2024
Greetings
This year, the SETI AIR program is launching a series of new residencies, each focused on a discipline, or “territory,” of creative practice. The first residency off the starting block is Cosmic Consciousness, which interweaves language and the written word with the exploration of consciousness and intelligence. Right now, the “I” in SETI is a placeholder for technology, as we’re searching the cosmos for technosignatures. But - what does “intelligence” actually mean? Poets, authors, and philosophers are uniquely suited to delve into this existentialist question. I look forward to seeing this residency come to life. Submission details below. ’s reflections on space travel, and Jonathon Keats ’ exploration of the nature of time. Enjoy the read!
Wishing you clear skies,
Bettina

Call for Submissions Cosmic Consciousness Literary Residency
The SETI AIR program invites writers and poets working in the areas of literature, speculative fiction/sci-fi, experimental poetry, and philosophy to submit proposals. The artworks resulting from this residency should reflect and expand on the SETI Institute’s “Intelligence and Con-sciousness” research division, whose central science questions are: ‘What is the nature of consciousness?’ and ‘What is the nature and evolution of intelligence?’ At the end of the resi-dency, the resulting texts will be published (print and/or digital) and may be presented at a special event that includes readings by the authors.
Areas of creative research may engage with the following topics:
- Experiments in language and consciousness
- Alien intelligence and cultural exchange
- Transhumanism and posthuman consciousness
- AI and consciousness
- Multisensory poetry and multiple intelligences
Deadline to submit: 1 July 2024, 11:59pm EST (Eastern Standard Time)
This Call for Submissions is open globally.
