SETI AIR Newsletter July 2021

Greetings

Bettina Forget

Central to the AIR Program’s mandate is our mission to connect the SETI Institute’s scientists with forward-thinking contemporary artists, so that they may inspire each other to catalyze new modes of comprehension. This month, we are welcoming a new artist to the program who will contribute to our ongoing endeavour to bridge the disciplines. Brittany Nelson’s thought-provoking, poetic works express the curiosity, solitude, and longing that are connected to the search for Life beyond Earth. I am excited to have her be part of the AIR family. Welcome, Brittany!

Our current SETI AIRs Alfred (Daedelus) Darlington and Jonathon Keats are also exploring aspects related to SETI research. With his project (un)Earthed, Alfred is creating a sonic experience that immerses the listener in the SETI Institute's iconic search for technosignals. Meanwhile, Jonathon is conceiving The Library of the Great Silence, a lending library for extraterrestrial visitors to our planet. Find out more about these fascinating projects by following the links below.

Wishing you a summer filled with shooting stars, sunshine and joy,
Bettina, Director of SETI AIR

Artist Spotlight

We are delighted to welcome Brittany Nelson to the SETI AIR program. Brittany works with 19th century photographic chemistry techniques to address themes of queer and feminist science fiction. Her latest works include a series of bromoils (a printmaking technique that replaces a photograph's silver with lithographic ink) based on photos of the Martian landscape taken by the Opportunity rover. Brittany also explored technique of holography for her series Tiptree's Dead Birds, an ephemeral recreation of the letters of the closeted lesbian science fiction writer Alice Sheldon, who wrote under the pen name James Tiptree, Jr.

Brittany divides her time between Richmond, Virginia, USA, and Trondheim, Norway, and has exhibited her work internationally at venues such as The Newcomb Art Museum (New Orleans, LA), Patron Gallery (Chicago, IL), Morgan Lehman (New York, NY), Die Ecke (Santiago, Chile), Sonnenstube (Lugano, Switzerland), and Bonniers Konsthall (Stockholm, Sweden).

Brittany's work has been featured in publications such as Art in AmericaFrieze, and WIRED.
