Greetings
This month we’re featuring the work of Brittany Nelson, whose solo exhibition I can’t make you love me opens in Chicago this month. Brittany’s has an uncanny knack for connecting the quest for space exploration with the human condition, drawing parallels between our search for life beyond Earth with the longing for human connection. “I feel a connection and fascination to the people and machines that are searching deep within the vacuum of the universe for a signal someone else is there,” she says in an interview with Cultured. “They are very proac-tively trying to close the gap and this soothes the feeling of impossibility I had as a young per-son to do this for myself.”
Read more about Brittany’s work and catch up on our SETI AIR’s exhibitions, releases, and publications.
Wishing you clear skies,
Bettina
Artist Spotlight
Brittany Nelson
Brittany has been with the AIR program for about two years now, and this month she is pre-senting the first instalment of artworks resulting from her residency. Brittany has shot photos and video at the Hat Creek Observatory’s Allen Telescope Array, visited the SETI Institute’s headquarters, and interviewed many of our scientists, including Jill Tarter. This research in-spired a rich, enigmatic body of new work that interweaves with the narrative strands of her previous œuvre. Look out for a SETI Live with Brittany in March, where we’ll discuss her crea-tive trajectory during her time with the AIR program. In the meantime, you can see her solo ex-hibition at Patron Gallery in Chicago and streaming online at the e-flux Film Festival.
