Senior Accountant and/or Budget Analyst

Position Summary
The SETI Institute is currently looking for a Part Time Senior Accountant and/or a Senior Budget Analyst. Under the general supervision of the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant/Senior Budget Analyst will be responsible for budgetary and financial functions for the Institute. This is a Part Time position and a significant portion of the work can be performed from a remote location. Remote candidates who live within an hour and a half travel will be considered. Senior Accountant Responsibilities

  • Own much of the monthly closing process and account reconciliations
  • Prepare, maintain, and import from complex Excel based journal entry templates
  • Maintain the accuracy of all GL entries; monitor and test the accuracy of entries in all accounting modules (GL, AP, AR, and Cash modules) and correct any errors
  • Prepare invoices for selected customers/contracts
  • Other duties as assigned


Senior Accountant Requirements

  • BS/BA degree and 10 years or equivalent experience as a GL accountant, including 5 years in non-profit or government contract accounting
  • Excellent understanding of GAAP accounting principles and GAO government accounting requirements
  • Understanding of the correct way to report TRNA and releases from restrictions
  • Experience with high volume accounts payable and 100+ employee, multi-state payroll
  • Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, lookup tables, and logic functions
  • Experience with cloud-based accounting applications such as Intacct, bill.com, or equivalent
  • CPA certification is a plus


Senior Budget Analyst Responsibilities

  • Work with ~70 budget owners to create a rolling 6 forecast and an annual forecast for existing grants and functional departments and with Development and Grants Administration to create budgets for grant applications and new contracts
  • Build and maintain a consolidated excel template to import forecasts and budgets into accounting system
  • Build and maintain budget vs actual and forecast reports; review reports with budget owners
  • Build a consolidated agency annual budget including a year over year comparison to prior periods
  • Other duties as assigned


Senior Budget Analyst Requirements

  • BS/BA degree and 10 years or equivalent experience as a financial and/or budget analyst
  • Experience creating forecasts and budgets for a $20MM+ agency and with 50+ separate budget units and tracking performance against budget in Excel or equivalent
  • Expert level Excel skills including pivot tables, index/match, lookup tables, Excel tables and logic functions; macro experience would be a plus
  • Experience as a user of SQL and/or Salesforce reports
  • Basic understanding of GAAP accounting
  • Proven ability to provide excellent customer service to internal budget owner customers
