Dr. Faber, who joined the astronomy faculty at the University of California Santa Cruz in 1972, is a professor emerita at that school, and was a member of the SETI Institute’s Board of Directors in the 1990s.
Her expertise is in the field of the evolution and behavior of galaxies, and Faber was one of the small team that discovered the “Great Attractor” – an ensemble of galaxies with a combined mass trillions of times that of the Sun. She is the recipient of many awards for her work, and became a valuable addition to the Institute’s Board by offering her extensive knowledge of both astronomy and astronomical instrumentation.
