September 18, 2024, Mountain View, CA - The SETI Institute announced its first Artist-in-Residence (AIR) STEAM education residency and open call. The Beyond Silos residency combines the SETI AIR program’s focus on creative practice based on research with the SETI Institute’s strong commitment to education and outreach. STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) is becoming more popular in science and art education, encouraging creative thinking, innovation and accessible learning methods. The title Beyond Silos reflects the goal of breaking down barriers between art and science, creating a more inclusive way of teaching that benefits all students.

The Beyond Silos residency gives art educators financial support and resources to create a STEAM Education project for K-12 students. Educators will complete the project during the 18-month residency in a school or in partnership with a community organization. In addition to the $14K stipend, educators will work with SETI Institute scientists, educators, and partners to develop their projects.

“The SETI AIR program lives at the intersection of art and science, making the STEAM Education residency a fantastic match for our program’s mandate,” said Bettiina Forget, AIR Program Director. “I’m excited to support educators as they explore new ground in transdisciplinary pedagogy. I’m certain that Beyond Silos will make a meaningful contribution to the field of education.”

The Beyond Silos Open Call encourages art educators to submit a first-round application for consideration on the Beyond Silos shortlist. The submission deadline is October 15, 2024.
