Research Scientist
Disciplines: Solar Physics, Software Engineering
Degree/Major: Ph.D., Applied Mathematics, University of Sheffield, 2016
Curriculum vitae: CV_FREIJ_NABIL.pdf
nfreij@seti.orgDr. Nabil Freij is a solar physicist whose research focuses on magnetic waves and their propagation through the solar atmosphere. In addition, he studies small-scale explosive events such as Ellerman Bombs and UV bursts.
As a dedicated advocate for open-source scientific software, he contributes significantly to the Python software ecosystem, particularly for Heliophysics through his work with the SunPy Project and astronomy through his work with the Astropy Project and broader ecosystem with Scientific Python.
Dr. Freij's diverse career spans both research and software development. He has served as a Research Software Engineer at BAERi, where he specialized in user-tools and software development for several NASA Heliophysics missions. At the University of Reading, he worked as a data scientist developing a near-real-time weather system with historical climate trends for agriculture producers. His previous academic research was at the Universitat de les Illes Balears, where he investigated coronal heating, coronal rain, spicules and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves.
He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Sheffield and a Master of Physics from the University of Warwick.
