As part of NASA's Asteroid Threat Assessment Project, SETI Institute data scientist Jeff Smith has uncovered a way to identify more bolides than was previously possible. Using data from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper, an instrument used to optical changes Earth's atmosphere, indicating the presence of lighting, Jeff and his team have developed a machine learning-based bolide detection and light curve generation pipleline, which has identified more than 2,500 bolides. Franck Marchis sits down with Jeff to discuss this breakthrough and why it's important.
