Join us for a special SETI Live on Friday October 14 at 11:00am with Andy Cheng, planetary scientist at JHU/APL and a Lead Investigator for the DART mission to discuss the recent announcement about the mission. Analysis of data obtained 2 weeks after the historical impact by the investigation team shows the spacecraft's kinetic impact with its target asteroid, Dimorphos, successfully altered the asteroid’s orbit. This marks humanity’s first time purposely changing the motion of a celestial object and the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.
Andy Cheng will discuss with Senior Astronomer Franck Marchis on what has been learned from the impact, its surprising effect on the asteroid’s moon and what we can learn on the future of planetary defense.
