JWST Directly Images First Exoplanets

The JWST's Early Release Science program is making a variety of observations during the first five months of science operations that will allow scientists to quickly learn how to use the instruments and produce scientific results. As a part of this program, a team is making high contrast images of exoplanets and their systems using the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The first direct images of super-Jupiter exoplanets HIP 65426 b and VHS 1256 b have been processed and submitted for publication. Today, we are joined by the program's co-PI Andrew Skemer from the University of California Santa Cruz to discuss these amazing new images and potential of our newest space telescope.
