B.A. physics Stanford 1955; Ph.D. UCB Engineering Science 1960. UCB Professor in EECS, Astronomy Department, and the Graduate School. Research on millimeter interferometry and frequency independent feeds and receivers. He was a co-discoverer, with Charles Townes, of interstellar NH3 and H2O; Director of UCB Radio Astronomy Laboratory 1971-1996; elected to NAS i1999; Jansky Lecturer 2001; awarded the URSI Balthasar van der Pol Gold Medal for Distinguished Research in Radio Science 2008; Member of the SETI Institute Board of Directors (1984 – 2014); UCB Marilyn and Watson Alberts Chair for SETI (1998-2011). He upgraded the Allen Telescope Array feeds and planned observational projects up until he passed away in 2024.
